PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Turkey hunting season is set to begin in Maine with the hunt suspended in the northernmost reaches of the state.
The harsh winter prompted the state to halt the turkey hunt in wildlife management districts 1-6 in northern Maine. The hunting season is open in the rest of the state and begins on Monday. Hunters can take two turkeys in districts 7 and 9-29 but there is a one-bird limit in district 8.
State officials said turkey hunting is legal from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. A spring and fall wild turkey permit costs $20 for residents and nonresidents.
The snowy March left woods covered in snow at a time when turkeys are normally breeding and nesting.
