GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A new trial date has been set for a Louisiana business and three men accused of smuggling white-tailed deer into Mississippi in 2011 and 2012.

The Sun Herald reports U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden has changed the trial date from March 17 to May 12.

Attorneys for Ronald Reine and Brian Reine asked for the delay because the trial was set less than five weeks from the date of their initial court appearance. The attorneys filed motions saying they had inadequate time to prepare a defense.

Also indicted are Bruce Swilley Jr. and Omni Pinnacle LLC based in Pearl River, La.

The business and the men, all from Slidell, are accused of violating a law that protects the Mississippi's deer population from chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis.
