MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials say wolf hunters trapped 80 percent of their kills and used dogs to take six animals.
DNR carnivore specialist Dave MacFarland told the agency's board Wednesday that hunters killed 154 wolves during the season that ended last week. That's four more wolves than the statewide limit for nontribal hunters.
MacFarland said 123 wolves were trapped. Of the remaining 31, 3 were killed with a bow, 22 with a firearm and six were corralled by dogs.
The DNR announced in September it would ask hunters to allow federal scientists to examine their wolf carcasses in an effort to determine if their dogs are attacking the wolves. MacFarland says scientists examined eight carcasses but they weren't taken with dogs and none showed any bite injuries.
