The She Said Butcher Shop is the first woman-owned-and-operated butcher shop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Melissa, the owner (photo below), prides herself on catering to her community. She provides affordable cuts of locally sourced meat, as well as advice on how to prepare it.
“My passion for becoming a butcher started when I was young,” she said. “I grew up helping my dad butcher deer and stuff sausage in our garage. I then went on to study meat science at North Dakota State University, where I fell even more in love with the profession. After managing several different local meat departments, I knew that I was ready to start my own business.”
Like it or not, Melissa’s butcher shop gained nationwide notoriety in early January 2023 for something other than her outstanding products or customer service.
As you’ll see in the Facebook video below, a fast-running whitetail crashed through her butcher shop’s glass door. The crazy scene was captured by a surveillance camera.
For me, the video is difficult to watch. After busting through the front door, and sending small pieces of glass everywhere across the floor, the panicked deer tries unsuccessfully (twice) to escape by jumping through a window. Thankfully the deer exits the butcher shop through the smashed door.
When you watch the video, notice how Melissa has two side-by-side glass doors for entering and exiting her business. It’s lucky for the deer — and Melissa — that it didn’t crash through the second glass door, too.
“This was truly an ordeal and I am really not sure who was more scared at the time me or the deer, but it was a pretty terrifying experience overall,” Melissa wrote on Facebook. “Other than a smashed door, a hole in the wall and a few broken plants, everything else came out unscathed and I am thankful, because it could have been so much worse, not only with damages, but potentially could have seriously hurt someone. I hope that the deer is ok and back telling the story to her friends about the crazy experience she had today escaping the butcher. Wow! What a day.”
