CHIPLEY, Fla. (AP) — Heavy rains washed away some 15 acres of enclosures at the Seacrest Wolf Preserve in the Florida Panhandle.

Preserve owner Cynthia Watkins says the preserve's 32 wolves are traumatized by last week's flooding.

The News Herald of Panama City reports that a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer shot and killed a rare British Columbian Wolf that escaped during the flooding. The officer spotted the wolf on Monday night in Chipley.

Watkins says she's "heartbroken" and "devastated." She says volunteers are working to restore the habitat to keep the wolves safe.

She estimates it will take up to $100,000 to make repairs. She says the volunteer-run facility is the largest wolf preserve in the southeastern United States.

The preserve remains open for tours every Saturday.
