Hunters looking for a memorable experience this summer can apply for alligator permits in
Mississippi and Florida. Both states are accepting applications for lottery permit drawings later
this summer, prior to the seasons opening in August. Florida has added a new Super Hunt
drawing this year, which is similar to the state’s other Special Opportunity hunts.
Applications for hunting on private lands in Mississippi are being accepted from May 1 to July 1.
All applications and documents must be received at the Mississippi Department of Wildlife,
Fisheries and Parks headquarters in Jackson by July 1. The season opens on August 30 at noon
and ends at 6 a.m. on Septembeer 23 for private lands. There is no fee to apply. Anyone may
submit an application for a property in the open counties, as long as the landowner signs the
permit application. Only one application may be entered for each property.
In Florida, the state’s wildlife commission earlier this year established the Alligator Super Hunt
for the 2024 season. Hunters can pay $5 for each application and apply as many times during the
application period as desired to increase their chances of being drawn. The 2024 application
period is May 3 to June 3.
The number of permits will be established annually and will be selected through a random
drawing process. Up to two alligators may be harvested per permit. Selected permittees will be
allowed to hunt at most legally accessible alligator management units (AMUs) from August 15
to December 31. Only 16 AMUs are excluded from the Alligator Super Hunt.
