KODIAK, Alaska (AP) — A Kodiak homeowner shot and killed a 9-foot-tall bear on his lawn after it charged him.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports Tuesday Hamilton Long fired six rounds at the 1,000-pound bear.
Alaska State Troopers Kodiak Post supervisor Sgt. Eric Olsen says Long emptied the cylinder of his .44 magnum revolver. He says an investigator determined Long acted in self-defense.
Olsen is urging residents to avoid placing trash outside dumpsters. He says residents should close dumpster doors and secure the latches.
Long was picking up rummaged garbage from his yard when the bear charged him on Monday.
Before the incident, the 49-year-old noticed an animal had walked into the bushes near his home. He figured some bears were looking for things to eat.
