JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — State biologists say human behavior is the biggest reason that Mississippi's statewide deer season was marginal.

The statewide season ended Saturday.

WLOX-TV reports that biologists estimate there are about 1.7 million deer, with one buck for every three does.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that some people think the problem is that does are being over-hunted.

Biologist Lann Wilf of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks in Jackson says he doesn't think that's likely.

He says the biggest reasons hunters see fewer deer are that too many ATVs are out in the woods, people tend to hunt regularly from the same stands, and put out corn and protein all season. He says that if deer are given food, they don't have any reason to move around to feed.
