State Parks Great Places for Hunters to Crash on the Road

One bad thing about traveling while hunting is worrying about your gear in cheap hotels, but when you crash at a state park your biggest concern may be getting too much peaceful rest.

Mississippi's wildlife agency is again offering discounted lodging rates to hunters during the state's ongoing hunting seasons. These are offered in autumn, when bookings in the state parks are down. Unfortunately a turkey hunter in spring or summer hog hunter might not get the discount, but so be it. It's still a very nice deal.

Alabama has offered a similar deal before at Cheaha, DeSoto, Lake Guntersville, Joe Wheeler and Lakepoint state parks. All are gorgeous, close to solid public land hunting and also are among the state's resort parks. That means you could have a lodge room or cabin; the lodges have restaurants with good vittles.

Perhaps other states offer similar discounts. West Virginia DNR offers a couple of state park quota hunts, as does Kentucky, Indiana and some others. Hunters don't have to search too far to find out whether you can add a deer to your season limit or maybe have some special, limited hunting opportunities or save a few dollars in a state park.

Mississippi State Parks is offering the discounts to hunters October 2018 through February 2019. You have to have a valid Mississippi hunting license to get the special rates, which are:

  • Cabin that sleep four or less - $50.00 / night
  • Standard RV sites - $18.00 / night
  • Full RV sites - $20.00 / night

Participating State Parks:

  • Clarkco State Park
  • George P. Cossar State Park
  • Hugh White State Park
  • J. P. Coleman State Park
  • John W. Kyle State Park
  • Lake Lincoln State Park
  • Lake Lowndes State Park
  • Legion State Park
  • Leroy Percy State Park
  • Natchez State Park
  • Roosevelt State Park
  • Tombigbee State Park
  • Trace State Park
  • Wall Doxey State Park

For reservations made via 1-800-GO-PARKS or www.mdwfp.com/parks, a refund for the discounted amount will be issued upon arrival (with proof of a valid Mississippi hunting license).

Be sure to check with your state wildlife agency or state parks division to see if you can get any special rates in your area or another state where you may be traveling. Saving bucks while hunting bucks, or coyotes or other game, is a good deal.
