Great Backcountry Gear—Part 2

Backcountry hunters everywhere need to be shown the many options for portable power from Brunton Hunting (307-857-4700; www.bruntonhunting.com). All are ideal for charging cell phones, digital cameras, gps systems, and more. Brand new is the ReSync ($168) power pack designed specifically for demanding USB-equipped devices like tablet computers, e-readers, smart phones, and GPS units. The compact ReSync (2.7x5.7x 0.9 inches) features a 9000mA rechargeable lithium polymer battery with power gauge and auto shut-off; it’s also all-weather tough, weighs just 10 ounces, and stows easily in a backpack.

Most all of Brunton’s proven “camping-dedicated” gear has been moved into the sister company Primus line, where there’s plenty of new-for-2012 innovation. Most every base camp could benefit from the impressive FireHole series of full-size two-burner stoves designed to run on easily accessible 1-pound propane canisters. The flagship FireHole 300 ($295) offers ground-breaking amenities like an on-board light and cook timer, included utensil kit (custom-fit into the stove lid), and integrated flexible fuel line that won’t ever get left behind. You’ll also find smart recessed control knobs that are sleeker and snag-free, and windscreens that fold down to double as a handy prep area. The FireHole 200 ($175) and FireHole 100 ($149) offer similar construction and detail with a few less features.

What’s the trouble with most “survival” kits? To be of any use, they have to be carried in a pack that you must remember to keep with you always. New SurvivalStraps (www.survivalstraps.com) ride along with you effortlessly wherever you go—right on your wrist. Created with specially woven paracord, SurvivalStraps can be instantly unwound and transformed into a durable, multi-purpose rope. Available in over 1,000 color combinations, SurvivalStraps can be customized with dog tags embossed with military identification, medical information, a name or favorite quote. SurvivalStraps bracelets are available in a regular and wide-band design; the regular bracelet provides 16 feet of usable paracord and the wide bracelet unwinds into 24 feet. Choose from stainless steel shackle closure or a plastic side release buckle.

“Every successful hunter needs a game bag,” say the innovators at Caribou Gear (303-798-5824 www.biggamebags.com). They’re right of course, and Caribou’s Ultra-light synthetic Big Game Bags are smartly designed with lock loops, and light reflective attachments. They’re also super-strong, shrink-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Several sizes are custom-designed for different game and part sizes.

Customers are always looking to maximize their backcountry health and performance. Wilderness Athlete (www.wildernessathlete.org), a leader in nutrition products designed for hunters, has unveiled Hy-Altitude Advantage for aspiring high country hunters. Hy-Altitude Advantage is a two-part system made up of a capsule and Wilderness Athletes Hydration & Recover drink. When drink and capsule are taken together, the effect of the pill is amplified and helps hunters process oxygen more quickly and efficiently—in addition to helping rebound from the effects of altitude sickness. For maximum results, Altitude Advantage should be taken at least five days before a hunt.
