Shooting from Tripods: Unshakable Support!

Years ago, tripod-type gun rests were large, heavy, unwieldy systems — some cradling rifles from stock to forend. Fine for static shooting, they certainly did not enhance shooting experiences in dynamic environments. While they were built for mobility, nobody was in a hurry to carry one up a mountain or across expansive crop fields. For companies and shooters who understood the benefits of shooting from tripods, innovative product development simply had to happen. Thank goodness it did. In fact, few products over the past handful of years have changed the shooting and hunting game like tripod-mounted gun rests.
Over the past half-dozen years, scores of tripod systems have made their way to market from basic it’ll-do systems at value price points to premium at incredibly unreasonable prices. No matter which platform you choose, some support is better than no support at all. Even so, some things do matter when it comes to precision accuracy, mitigation of fatigue, adjustability and reliability. Shooting support should mean peace of mind in multiple facets.
A shining example of a premium, feature-rich, yet affordable tripod-mounted gun rest system is Kopfjäger. Designed by two Dallas SWAT officers to enhance accuracy in high stakes shooting environments while also virtually eliminating fatigue during long stand-offs, Kopfjäger gun rests were immediately popular among law enforcement officers. Of course, recreational shooters, competitors and hunters also recognized the system’s benefits. While Kopfjäger’s heavier 5-pound aluminum tripods are best suited for range shooting in sitting-up to standing shooting positions, especially with the KIL Strap, the brand’s lighter 3.85-pound carbon-fiber tripod is the preferred choice for hunters and on-the-run competition shooters, as it accommodates shooting from a low high-prone position all the way up to standing.
With Reaper Grip or Reaper Rail heads averaging 2 to 2.5 pounds, Kopfjäger’s overall carbon-fiber tripod gun rest weights average about 6 pounds, while aluminum models add about 1.5 pounds. The Reaper Grip features a pivoting head for even gripping on straight and tapered stocks. Reaper Rail systems are available for Picatinny and Arca Swiss systems. All Kopfjäger Reaper heads feature 360 degrees of pan with adjustable drag, as well as 108 degrees of locking tilt (21 degrees up and 87 degrees down). Securing pan and tilt on target eliminates fatigue and provides rock-solid support for enhanced accuracy even when shooting under stress in a standing position. Learn more at www.KJRests.com.
