First Glance: Browning TD-X Pattern

Browning adds a new pattern to its popular A-TACS camo line.
First Glance: Browning TD-X Pattern

Browning’s new A-TACS TD-X pattern had SHOT Show attendees stopping to gawk. Of course, the legendary gun manufacturer was getting plenty of jaw drops from the masses stopping to admire the numerous shotguns and rifles lining its monstrous booth, but Browning personnel were also kept plenty busy going over the features of this advanced concealment system.

An idea that has brewing for the past three years, TD-X was developed to meet the needs of treestand and deep woods hunters alike. The pattern will be available on the Hell’s Canyon Speed, Women’s and Youth Wasatch clothing lines.

Not your traditional stick-and-leaf pattern, this new tactical pattern relies on correctly lit and color-accurate photographs taken in nature. A mathematical algorithm is then used to take the colors and patterns from the photos and rewrite them into abstract shapes composed of organically shaped pixels. Very cool.

TD-X showcases numerous limb-like features without crossing over into the pure stick-and-leaf look. Of course, looking at the pattern in a SHOT Show booth is a lot different than seeing it in the woods, but my prediction is it will work just as well as the 2015 A-TACS AU pattern — a pattern I’ve had incredible success with.

Two TD-X garments that jumped out at me were the Backcountry-FM Gore Windstopper Soft Shell Jacket and Soft Shell Pant.

Water resistant, windproof and breathable, the jacket features a zip-through collar, lower hand-warmer pockets and a pair of Napoleon chest pockets. I was also excited to see the harness-access system and internal pockets. The jacket provides an athletic fit, and though I only wore it for a short while, seemed to be quiet and very comfortable.

The pants feature a water-resistant exterior with a thin interior fleece, integrated belt loops and a lower thigh knife pocket. I thought the knife pocket was a nice touch. A pair of side zippers promise easy on/off, and the anatomical knee darts and crotch panel ensure full range of motion and durability.
