SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia's new electronic game checking system shows almost 900 black bears and more than 5,000 deer have been killed so far during the early archery and crossbow seasons.
The seasons began Sept. 26 and run through Nov. 21.
Previously, the Division of Natural Resources couldn't tally hunting numbers until game tags were collected at the end of a season and counted by hand.
DNR game management supervisor Chris Ryan says in a news release that the agency is pleased with how hunters are using the new system.
The new system requires hunters to get a permanent DNR identification number. The ID number allows hunters to check in their game from their phones, computers or at an official license agent/checking station.
