EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Two Worcester County Appaloosa horses are on the mend after suffering injuries in an apparent bear attack.

The Telegram & Gazette reports 14-year-old Brooke Perry discovered the wounds Friday when she was putting 19-year-old Ozzy and 20-year-old Justin in their East Brookfield barn for the night. Perry says she was rubbing the horses' necks when she felt something sticky. She looked at her hand and saw blood.

Michele Perry says she called her veterinarian, who rushed to the barn and sedated the horses while treating their injuries.

The horses' enclosure was examined by a state Environmental Police officer, who determined the attacker was likely a bear.

Michele Perry says bears have roamed her property in the past. She's installed cameras to keep a closer watch on her horses.
