TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida wildlife officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for bears on the move.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says bears are leaving their winter dens and looking for food. Their increased activity means it's more likely to spot bears in neighborhoods.

Officials say black bears are generally not aggressive, though a female bear may try to defend her cubs. People are warned to never approach a bear and to keep garbage and pet food secure in bear-resistant containers.

Drivers also are urged to watch for bears on the roads. According to the wildlife commission, the most frequent known cause of death for black bears in Florida is a collision with a vehicle. More than 200 bears were killed after being struck on roads last year.
