Opponents Ask Judge To Stop Florida Black Bear Hunt

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Animal protection and environmental groups are seeking an injunction to stop a bear hunt set to begin Oct. 24.

The coalition's lawyer told a Leon County judge Thursday that there are several flaws in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's plan to allow the hunt.

The groups argue that the state doesn't have a reasonable plan to ensure that hunters won't go beyond the 320 bear limit set for the week-long hunt and that there's a good likelihood more bears will be killed.

They also say that the agency didn't use solid scientific methods to come up with the 320 bear limit and that it based its estimated bear population on old data.

Lawyers for the state argued that the rules for the hunt were well thought out.
