LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas landowners have until Jan. 27 to sign up to be considered for funding in 2012 for the Wetlands Reserve Program.
State Conservationist Mike Sullivan with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service says Arkansas is second in the nation in the program's wetland restoration, with more than 200,000 acres restored.
Sullivan says officials are particularly interested in restoring bottomland hardwoods and hydrology in the Lower Mississippi River, Red River and Arkansas River valleys.
Wetlands are areas saturated by water all or most of a year. They naturally filter contaminants out of water, as well as recharge groundwater, and prevent flooding and soil erosion.
The program is voluntary and is funded through the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, otherwise known as the Farm Bill.
