Vermont is expanding bow and shotgun season for fall turkeys.
WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) — Vermont's fall turkey hunting season is expanding this year.
This fall, the shotgun season will increase from seven to nine days, bow hunting will be expanded statewide and some areas of the state — Wildlife Management Units B, D1, D2, and H1 — will be open for shotgun season for the first time this fall.
The changes were made by the Fish and Wildlife Board after the state recommended that turkey hunting be expanded based on scientific data and public input.
Vermont has a large wild turkey population, estimated to be more than 50,000 birds.
Officials say the weather was favorable for chick survival this year so hunters can expect to see more turkeys this fall.
