PHOENIX (AP) — Many indoor shooting ranges in the Phoenix metro area are seeing a spike in customers, likely because of the loss of open-air desert ranges to development and the growing popularity of personal firearms' growing popularity.

Employees at one new business, Cunningham's Shooting Range in Queen Creek, estimated that nearly 900 people turned out for its opening day in early July.

Meanwhile, Shooter's World in central Phoenix plans to open a range in Peoria by November, followed by ranges in the Mesa area and northern Arizona.

Range owners attribute part of the increased interest in guns to women, who they say are driving much of the industry's growth.
