SOL Emergency Bivy XL
If you venture to the Western woods enough during your bowhunting tenure, you’ll eventually find yourself in a survival situation. Be ready for it. I tote a SOL Emergency Bivvy XL every time I leave my truck. Weighing just 6.3 ounces, this lifesaver takes up zero room in your pack and is designed to reflect 90 percent of your body heat back to you. Plus, no wind, rain or snow can get inside.
Cyclops Ranger XP Headlamp
When you can save coin and still put a quality product in your pack, I highly recommend it. Not only does this Cyclops Ranger XP headlamp provide a number of easy-to-toggle lighting options (one-watt super-bright CREE center white light, three bottom green LEDs, four side red LEDs and a side red LED strobe), but it’s also extremely lightweight and comfortable. The burn time is rated at five-plus hours, but I’ve run mine for over seven hours before a battery change was needed.
Browning Speed Load
The Browning Speed Load is a beefy, push-button replaceable-blade knife that is without question the most versatile blade I’ve ever taken afield. The replaceable-blade options on this backcountry beauty are many: drop point, box cutter, guthook and caper. Plus, the knife accepts standard utility blades. The G-10 black textured handle promises a no-slip grip.
I’ve had this MSR PocketRocket stove in my pack for 10 years, and it has never failed me. It weighs just 3 ounces and folds up neatly into its miniscule storage container. My average boil time at an elevation of 9,500 feet is just over four minutes.
Swarovski ATX 25-60x65
I’ve spied more western big game through a spotting scope than you can shake a stick at. Yes, a scope will add a bit more weight to your pack, but it’s weight you don’t want to be without, especially when hunting open and semi-open landscapes. Swarovski’s ATX 25-60x65 tips the scales at just 55.9 ounces and measures a compact, pack-friendly 13.3 inches in length. Its 65mm objective module married with an angled eyepiece promises hours of comfortable, headache-free glassing.
No, I don’t have to tote a water purifier that filters 5 liters of water at a time, but it sure is nice. Typically, I’m hunting with a partner and can top off a pair of two-liter reservoirs quickly and have a liter left over to boil a Mountain House meal. Plus, thanks to the Mission’s hang-and-filter technology, I can simply fill the bag, open a valve, and fill reservoirs and containers. The Mission will filter up to 4,750 gallons of water on a single filter and removes 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses and protozoa. The unit folds up neatly and has a mass weight of just 1 pound, 6 ounces.
Badlands Water Reservoir 2 Liter
Regular hydration is a must, and you’ll want something more efficient than a plastic bottle on your hip. Badlands’ 2 Liter Hydration Reservoir comes with a 36-inch Hydrafusion tube — a tube designed to keep your water cold — fitted with a bite and suck end attachment. The Plug N Play tube connector works in harmony with the reservoir’s reversible nature to make cleaning a breeze. The slider opening promises a leak-proof seal, and the 4-ounce bag carries an unconditional lifetime warranty.
Sierra Designs Mobile Mummy 800
I demand a warm, lightweight bag, and the Mobile Mummy 800 delivers both of those qualities in spades. This bag moves with you, allowing you to sleep on your side, back or stomach. Perhaps my favorite feature is the arm holes that allow you to wear the bag like a robe and have full use of your arms. The pack’s insulation is 800 fill duck DriDown, the liner material is 20D nylon Taffetta, and the outershell is constructed from 20D nylon Ripstop. Branded with a 15-degree Farenheit comfort rating, the Mobile Mummy 800 weighs 2 pounds, 5 ounces.
Kelty TN 3 Person Backpacking Tent
When you’re in the backcountry, a certain amount of comfort is important. You need a room so you can dress inside a shelter and store gear. This three-man tent offers a 39.5-square-foot floor, boasts a pack weight of just 5 pounds, 8 ounces, and crunches up to a pack length of 14 inches. Hug-clip technology simplifies the setup (I can have this tent up in five minutes), as does the color-coded clip construction. The fly offers additional space for boot and pack storage, and the tent is a tank when it comes to resisting those want-to-kill-you backcountry weather patterns.
A retractable fork with an extra long extension to reach deep into those never-ending dehydrated meal bags. For more information, go to www.jetboil.com.
Swarovski EL Binoculars
A dream to handle and tote, the lowlight clarity of the EL 42 is second to none, and its edge-to-edge sharpness promises an incredible field of view. For more information, go to www.swarovskioptik.com.
