RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A former state senator and unsuccessful candidate for governor in South Dakota has pleaded guilty to a big game violation and lost his hunting privileges for a year.

Authorities say 64-year-old Gordon Howie illegally killed a mountain lion that was caught in a bobcat trap on Jan. 31. The Rapid City Journal reports that he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge Wednesday.

He and his son, Shadrach, both were given suspended 90-day jail sentences and ordered to pay nearly $300 in fines and fees. Both also are banned from hunting for a year.

Howie served in the Legislature between 2005 and 2010. He gave up his spot as president of the tea party group when he ran for governor in 2010. He finished fourth in a field of five Republican candidates in the primary.
