The Shoreview City Council says the suburban community has too many turkeys.
SHOREVIEW, Minn. (AP) The Shoreview City Council says the suburban community has too many turkeys.
The council voted Monday night to remove most of the city's wild turkey population and donate the meat to charity. A contractor will begin netting birds in two neighborhoods in the coming days.
A permit from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources allows up to 75 of the city's estimated 100 turkeys to be removed. The roundup ends April 1.
The council also directed staff to look for ways to strengthen Shoreview's ordinances against feeding wild animals. City Manager Terry Schwerm says the wild turkey population probably would have been the same if people weren't feeding the birds, but the flocks would likely be more spread out.
