BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Hunters killed fewer deer in North Dakota last year than in 2009, the state Game and Fish Department said.

Hunter success during the 2010 deer gun season was 64 percent, up from 59 percent the previous year, the department said. However, hunters killed about 67,000 deer last year, down from 75,000 during the 2009 deer season. The number of licenses issued last year was down 19 percent from the previous year because of fewer deer statewide.

"Deer numbers in many parts of the state continue on a downward trend following three consecutive difficult winters," big game biologist Bill Jensen said. "Coupled with an aggressive harvest approach on antlerless deer in units with deer numbers above management goals, this has resulted in a reduction in the deer population in many, but not all, (hunting) units."

The department is in the process of determining license recommendations for the 2011 season. The recommendations will be discussed with the public at Game and Fish advisory board meetings scheduled around the state the week of April 18. The proclamation will be sent to the governor's office for approval in late April.
