NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) — The new $4.6 million visitors center at the Neosho National Fish Hatchery is on schedule to open next month.
Hatchery director David Hendrix says the construction is nearly complete, and work to install the exhibits will begin soon.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that the new center will include a freshwater aquarium that will house several species of sport fish from southwest Missouri — including channel cat, paddlefish, the endangered pallid sturgeon, bass and rainbow trout.
Hendrix says he is hopeful the 9,500-square-foot center will be open by the end of September.
The Neosho hatchery opened in 1890 and is the oldest federal fish hatchery operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
