A report from the Land Trust Alliance concludes that trusts in Virginia conserved more land between 2005 and 2010 than any other state in the Southeast.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A report from the Land Trust Alliance concludes that trusts in Virginia conserved more land between 2005 and 2010 than any other state in the Southeast.
Citing data from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the alliance found that 314,225 acres were conserved during that period by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and 78,678 acres were protected by private land trusts.
The Virginia Outdoors Foundation is a public land trust created in 1966 by the General Assembly.
The Land Trust Alliance says North Carolina came in a distant second to Virginia in terms of land conservation. The Washington, D.C., alliance says North Carolina conserved about 132,000 acres during the same 2005-2010 period.
