INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A set of proposed changes to Indiana's deer-hunting rules has won a state panel's preliminary approval.
The Indiana Natural Resources Commission gave the suggested changes its early endorsement Tuesday. In November, state officials withdrew an earlier proposal after complaints that it would shrink the firearms and muzzle-loading seasons from 16 days to nine days.
The revised proposal keeps those seasons at 16 days each.
The state Department of Natural Resources will hold at least one public hearing on the proposals before they are returned to the commission for final approval.
The DNR is under pressure to cut the size of the state's deer population because the animals are eating crops and native plant life and are involved in a large number of collisions with cars.
