Idaho is a Rocky Mountain state with abundant natural resources and scenic areas. The landscape is rugged with some of the country's largest unspoiled natural areas. North Idaho receives large amounts of rain and snow from storms blown in from the Pacific Coast. There are no high mountain ranges to keep the clouds from that area, so precipitation may significantly more than that received in the southern part of the state. Southern Idaho, on the other hand, is protected on all sides by mountains, so the majority of that area receives very little rain or snow. Although the climate varies greatly in different areas of the state, Idaho's climate is typically temperate, meaning it has four seasons with substantial changes in the average temperatures between summer and winter.
