OGDEN DUNES, Ind. (AP) — The Lake Michigan town of Ogden Dunes has indefinitely suspended a deer cull opposed by some residents.
The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville report that the Town Council voted unanimously Monday to suspend the deer cull. The northern Indiana town received a special purpose deer control permit in September, allowing hunters to kill 40 deer between November and February.
The town had police officers serve as shooters from stands for a few days, and 17 deer were killed. Town officials said the hunt was needed because of more Lyme disease cases among residents.
Ogden Dunes leaders say a seven-member team will be appointed to look at less controversial solutions to eliminate the risk of the tick-borne disease, including contraception, trapping and removal.
