HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission has given preliminary approval to increase the number of mountain lion permits from 20 to 30 in the West Fork Bitterroot region in western Montana.
The Ravalli Republic reports (http://bit.ly/yTe8Zx) that the recommendation follows an elk predator study that resulted in state game managers recommending hunters kill more mountain lions to help elk herds grow.
Public comments on the plan approved Thursday are being accepted for 30 days.
State wildlife managers say the West Fork of the Bitterroot elk herd has dropped from nearly 2,000 elk in 2005 to 800 last spring.
Officials say the elk predator study found that mountain lions are the main predators of elk calves.
