The state Division of Natural Resources says a record number of black bears were killed during West Virginia's combined archery and gun seasons last year.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The state Division of Natural Resources says a record number of black bears were killed during West Virginia's combined archery and gun seasons last year.
The agency said Monday that preliminary information for the 2010 seasons shows the 2,392 bears killed surpassed the previous record of 2,069 in 2008. In 2009, 1,828 bears were killed.
The DNR says 454 bears were killed during the state's archery season, down from a record 987 bears killed by bow hunters in 2009.
But DNR assistant wildlife chief Paul Johansen credits extended hunting seasons and favorable food conditions in the state's forests with enabling firearms hunters to kill a record 1,938 bears. That's more than double the 841 bears killed during firearms season in 2009.
