Federal regulators open public hearings this week on changes to rules affecting Spanish mackerel, spiny lobster and other fisheries off the Southeast.
NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — Federal regulators open public hearings this week on changes to rules affecting Spanish mackerel, spiny lobster and other fisheries off the Southeast.
One proposal reduces the recreational bag limit for Spanish mackerel from 15 fish to 10 fish per person per day. The lobster rules, among other things, would limit some fishing areas to protect threatened corals and allow for public removal of derelict traps.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council holds a public hearing in New Bern, N.C., on Monday, followed by hearings in North Charleston, S.C., Pooler, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla., later this week.
Hearings are next week in Cape Canaveral and Duck Key, Fla.
The council regulates fisheries between 3 miles and 200 miles off the Southeast coast.
