WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is warning anglers across the state to beware of thin ice.
Vermont head game warden Col. David LeCours says the ice fishing has been good in recent weeks, but the water is warming and ice is moving away from shores in some places.
And the warmer water and longer days are prompting many fish such as walleye, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch and northern pike to move closer to their spawning areas and begin feeding heavily in preparation for spawning.
LeCours reminds ice fishermen to never fish alone, carry a cell phone, a flotation vest, ice spikes and to leave their vehicles on shore.
