SITKA, Alaska (AP) — A man who killed a brown bear near a Sitka residential area has been charged with unlawful possession of game.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel reports 25-year-old Aaron Didrickson killed the bear April 29 because he said it presented an immediate threat to his safety. State wildlife officials had earlier said nearby homeowners called someone in to shoot the bear after they saw it throughout the day.

State law requires the skull and meat of any bear killed in defense of life and property be salvaged and turned over to authorities.

However, Alaska Wildlife Troopers says Didrickson later posted messages on social media indicating he had saved some of the bear meat for his own consumption.

Troopers contacted him Friday, demanding forfeiture of the animal parts he didn't immediately surrender.
