TVA To Treat Weeds In Lake Guntersville

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The Tennessee Valley Authority will treat weeds in Lake Guntersville for six years starting this summer.

Al.com reports the agreement is part of a long-term search for a weed-control solution.

A new group of homeowners, fishermen, environmentalists and government officials will work with the Alabama Board for Aquatic Plant Management to control the weeds. The weeds spread quickly and hamper access for boaters and swimmers. But the weeds also provide a home and breeding areas for bass.

Under the plan, TVA officials will pay for weed treatment for three years. Afterward, the funding will gradually scale back until the new state board takes over in 2019. Treating the lake costs up to $1 million annually.
